Still.
Still editing! Still wrestling with the plot. Still trying to find moments.
In my editing, I remember a writing assignment in my very elementary days. My mom gave me a picture and simply told me to write a story about it.
As time moved foward, that was still one of the greatest moments in my education-
The cultivation of seeing a story.
In every moment there is a story, was a story, and will be.
Have you ever walked in a field, and pondered the many small and great feet that had walked there before?
Modern american books and movies have made a nasty habit within ourselves as a society and culture.
The habit of only seeing one story.
The custom of only walking in only one set of shoes. I like to call it the:
“main character habit”.
The old testament avoids this habit. It does not list only “excusable” personality traits.
There can be a problem within most books, even good books- the main character stays in their assigned role or has an excusable character arc.
That’s not how the old testament paints Jacob or Judah.
That’s not how Jesus approached the woman at the well…
And I get down about main characters- because I’ve been the villain, I’ve been the side character, I’ve been the beggar, the spoiled, the lost,
but I’ve also been the found.
And so have you.
In cloudy moments, I try to look away from and not to my own story. The moments unfolding are not my main scene. The music playing is not for me.
Around me are heroes, warriors, quiet survivors, faithful hearts, and growing souls.
Looking to Christ is in His word and in His people. It’s hard to see Him in them past the bumps and villain moments sometimes.
I love how the old testament records not excuses. Abraham failed, but he was also a man of faith. Moses was angry, but wise. Peter denied, yet was loved.
They each had their main character moment, a villain moment, an immature moment, a faithful moment.
We are all members of each others stories. And the stains we see, the characters we play impart a small glimmer of the giant story being told.
So I’m editing right now one story, but my own story is being edited by the Greatest Author.
How are you doing under His Quill?
